I just installed the latest patch available from gog, 1.02.8 but when I start the game it says v1.02.6

Not to worry, you're all set. I just downloaded the new patch from here as well. It goes back to the common complaint here from folks wondering why GOG numbers the patches differently then the creators do. I checked before installing the path, and my game version was 1.02.5 (from the last patch update), and after installing this current patch, I am also now v1.02.6, (can't tell you why GOG calls it 1.02.8, but they do), which is indeed the most recent patch from the FTL creators.
