lukew: I'm really excited for this but I'm curious about something. I was considering trying the Infinite Space mod. However, when the Advanced Edition releases, will I have to uninstall FTL and reinstall the vanilla version for it to work? I'm would guess that all mod users are wondering the same thing.
MaceyNeil: It should still be the same engine and core so it should still work, but i foresee the problem is that until the mod updates it won't reference the new items and features.
In short you should still be able to play infinite space, but without removing the mod you probably won't get any benefit to the FTL update.
This is suposition of course based on how other games handle similar issues and the fact that the infinite space mod doesn't have anything to do with the team writing the FTL update and vice versa.
Actually, the way FTL currently handles mods allows mod makers to "append" to existing game files, so a lot of mods simply "add" functionality rather than replacing it. The ones that "replace" elements/components (e.g. graphics, ships, etc.) also do so via append files, and they only replace specific elements (so any new elements will still be there).
Naturally, any mod that replaces things (e.g. graphics, ships, etc.) can only replace what's already there - so the "new" stuff may look out of place, depending on the mod, but it should still be there.
Unless, of course, FTL Advanced Edition completely revamps how the data files currently work and/or how modding is currently handled - in which case all mods will break until they're updated. Although not that likely, this isn't an impossible scenario - especially since modders have been wanting more power over their mods since day one - but if that were to occur I'd imagine the community would be warned ahead of time (hopefully).
So at this stage I'd say current mods will work, with the caveat that the more things a mod changes, the less likely it will be to work 100% (or the more likely it will just not look/feel right any more).
