I'm the type of gamer that constantly craves good stories and novel gameplay, and that means periodically I take a dip into entire new genres of games that I have no experience with.
I have virtually no experience at all with space simulators. The last thing I can remember that was anything like a space sim was Star Wars Battlefront 2, which has some sections in it where you can fly a fighter around. I wasn't terribly bad at those, but it leaves me wondering just how difficult Freespace is. Can someone with no practice at all in this sort of thing pick up this game and play it?

Absolutely. Freespace can be very unforgiving at higher diffculty but on the easier settings it's fine. Also there is a difficulty "slider" so more than "easy, hard, Here Be Dragons" - you can select a good setting for your ability.
The control is easy and intuitive an they have great tutorial missions that will have you up and flying quickly. Also has a great story to it.
I highly recommend it. There is only one Space Sim to beat it and that's the sequel though StarLancer came close to equaling it.
It's also a great price to take a chance on.
edit: The only potential problem is that it may spoil you for any one space combat sims :p
