I am experiencing serious lag when i am playing the game when in the nebular theater. If there is no nebular then it fine. It is possible that the size of the screen i am using is pushing the limits of the game engine beyond it's capabilities since when i turn scaling off it did run smoother but not smooth as glass.
Any ideas? I have not tried to update my drivers but i don't think thats necessary as it works fine in normal space and freespace 1 plays flawlessly.
Machine Specs
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
4GB PC1066 DDR
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2
Windows XP SP3
Dell W3007 30" LCD
I will try reloading my drivers tonight and see if that helps. This is kind of discouraging as i really liked the freespace 2 campaign.

Have you looked into the freespace open source project?

If your not running it already it should work alot better with a newer rig like yours then the original version.

I have not. But i will.
I took a quick look and am i to assume i just install this after installing FS2.

Yeah, just install the installer version after installing FS2. They have a installation wiki should you have any troube with it.

Ah, someone's really updated the instructions in the Wiki. Excellent. There are also two installation threads on the Hard Light forums:

and the noob version (noob in the most undisrespectful way possible): http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,61606.0.html
Regardless of what instructions you choose to follow, remember one thing: OpenAL. You must install OpenAL (a 3D audio API), because FreeSpace Open requires it. http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/Forms/AllItems.aspx
Get the OpenAL Installer for Windows and install it.

I am just using the auto installer thingy. Still going (curse my 5mb internet) i also installed openal.

The Freespace Open Project did the trick. I can now play the game flawlessly at 2560x1600 :D

With your rig it shouldn't pose any problem to get the full out of SCP.
Make sure you get the Media VPs to do so, you'll game will get a major (graphical) overhaul (gameplay is intact, the devs are fanatic about this).
