In 1998, Interplay worried a number of Descent series fans when they released a spin off, free-roaming space simulation game called Descent: Freespace. Gamers who picked up Freespace quickly found a compelling story, fantastic space combat, excellent voice acting, beautiful graphics, and plenty of replay value.
Everything from the intro movie to the final mission ran chills down my spine. The story about the Terrans, Vasudans, and Shivans is intriguing, missions vary from infiltrating enemy installations to capturing cruisers to surgical strikes on capital ships, and the sounds of Shivan fighters screaming past your ship snap you to attention.
In addition to a beautiful and polished experience, little details like a ship and technology encyclopedia, command and mission briefings with neat diagrams, team loadout customization, and an easy-to-use mission editor make Descent: Freespace a timeless classic.
