My Rig:

hmmm ... odd. unfortunately I can't help with this specific problem, but are you averse to downloading and installing the Freespace Open engine? It makes the game look a lot nicer (huge graphics boost), provides other general improvements, and adds a large amount of content through the available mods. If you are interested there are several threads here that deal with installing it (on Win, Mac, and Linux) and you can go to hard-light.net.

Could try installing a glide wrapper, I'm using nGlide it works great with Freespace 1

Please help!

If you don't want to use Java use the manual installation: start with exe and launcher, check if everything works then pass on to the various mods starting with the Freespace port, Silent Threat reborn and the MediaVPS (the new graphic assets).
It's just a matter of putting the files in the right folders, if you have problems the Hard Light Productions forum linked above should be your main resource for help and info.

Thanks! I tried the manual install, it worked, but if I open the launcher (wxlauncher) it prompts "Your system does not support the minimum resolution needed to play this mod (640x480).

I checked online, but there is no help to this specific problem. I tried the -res command line, but it didn't work either.

Unless you have another idea (which I would really appreciate) I give up.

Ask on the Hard Light Productions forum, the developers of the thing write there, I think they might be more helpful when troubleshooting the mod.
