Hi All. Just recently joined this forum and bought freespace2. One of the first games that I ever played. Anyways. Was playing it on my 20" DYNEX no problem. But when I connected this new 40" LED the game wont work. Now it is saying I need a 3D accelerator or "glide" for the game to work. Not really sure what is up because I dont understand much about computers and how could a monitor stop the game from working?

Thanks

First off: Welcome to GOG and the forums!

------
Interesting.
Glide is the old 3D graphics card that games used to use all the time and are no longer made. However, you can download a glide emulator from a variety of sources. GOG uses them on a variety of games that require it. They don't use it on FS2 since the game doesn't require one, though it does improve the graphics with vanilla FS2.

It is easy to install, you usually just put the files glide2xx and glide3xx into the game folder (or you computer system directory, but better your computer's folder) and you should be able to select the glide option.

GOG used to use a different glide wrapper, now they use nglide for a lot of their games:

It is free to download.

The other option is to download the Freespace 2 open source engine. It totally modernizes the game and makes it look absolutely stunning (as well as play nicely with modern Mac, PC and Linux OSes). There are also a lot of mods that you can get for it.

It requires the retail or GOG version of Freespace 2 (which you have), but after tha you download this on top of the vanilla version and it makes the game much nicer, especially if you download the modernized game assets. This is a community driven project and is free to download. If you are on Windows, it also requires you download OpenAL.

A GOGer put together some instructions which can be found here:
http://www.gog.com/forum/freespace_series/quick_and_simple_freespace_2_scp_installation_guide/page1

They are slightly out of date as while the assets are still 3.6.12, a new engine has been released, 3.6.14.

More links for manual installation instructions can be found here:
Getting started
Windows installation
These are slightly more up-to-date. The automated installer which used to work is no longer available anymore. However, the manual installation is not that bad.

Here's what the game looked like as of last year with the open source engine (even better now): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhAR8rWPluQ

Out of curiosity what is the resolution of the respective monitors (e.g. 1900 X 1200)?

Hey, thanks crazy Dave, thanks for the reply. WC3 also won't work and is saying it is because it can't find directX. I will try to freespace OPEN option as I have the required programs on my computer. I believe the SAMSUNG is 1920x1080 but since it is a TV monitor the resoltuoin is off so it working better at 1768x992. The dynex is much smaller, not sure what resolution though.

Thanks for the advice I got Freespace 2 Open to work. Got to Step 6 part a) with no problems and the game seems to work. But can't figure out part b) and onward. I will continue to figure it out. Does look very nice. Thanks again.

It may be the resolution difference causing the issue to creep in on one monitor but not the other (i.e. the required resolution requires the video card).

Anyway, good luck with the Freespace Open Install. It should be fairly straightforward. If not, there are these forums and also the hard-light forums (the people who make the mod). It should also completely clear up this problem - capable of running at pretty much any resolution which you can set and a modern game engine running OpenGL to boot.

Curious about WC3 - I'm assuming Wing Commander 3 rather than WarCraft 3, yes? :). I have the game on GOG, but haven't tried it myself yet. You can try the Wing Commander subforum or the general forum if you can't get help there. You can also contact GOG support itself.

My pleasure :) - Part b)?

I think I actually figured it all out now except moving the cut scenes to a different directory. But have not played through FS2 yet so gonna do that now. No actually War Craft 3 is the game I mean. It must be something to do with the older games because the new ones, Starcraft2, Diablo3, World of Tanks all work fine on the SAMSUNG.
Actually scratch that. Now that I did everything it told me to do in the Launcher the game is not working. =(. More tinkering i guess.

Had a 50/50 shot with WC3 :). My guess is a resolution issue - i.e. the older game is having trouble running on your monitor's resolution. I would've thought WC3 would've been fine.
