So here is how I got it working (on a 64 Bit Ubuntu 10.10 Linux):

1. GoG.com Version of FreeSpace2 purchased. And installed under Wine. Just to check that it runs.

2. Copied the complete Installation directory from my wine installation to a new Directory and renamed the Directory from "Freespace2" to Freespace2Open".

3. Downloaded FreeSpace open from here: Release 3.6.12 Final (File: fs2_open_3_6_12_INF.tar.bz2). Dearchived both files in the new "FreeSpace2Open" directory.

4. Downloaded Linux-Launcher: from here: Yet Another Launcher (File: yal-0.3-rc2-bin.tar.bz2) and copied all files also in the main directory "FreeSpace2Open".

5. Tried to start by running "fs2_launcher" but after configuration the game didn't run. Tried again by starting from console:

error while loading shared libraries: libtheora.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Oh, sure: I'm running 64 bit. So downloaded the 32 Bit Version of libtheora0 from here: lintheora0 (maverick, i386) (File: libtheora0_1.1.1+dfsg.1-3_i386.deb), uncompressed the content and copied all files from usr/lib/ to my systems /usr/lib32/ directory.

Tried again starting (fs2_launcher) and clicked "run" ... yahoo! Worked with 1600x1200.

Good job! Glad you figured it out.

Oh yeah, I also did step 7 of your post:

6. Copy all files from the data2/ and data3/ directories to the (newly created) data/movies subdirectory.

In addition, you can download the lBabylon Project (file TheBabylonProject.7z) and unarchive it in the main FreeSpace2Open folder. This will create a subdirectory "The Babylon Project". In the launcher, you can then simply select this mod from the list of available mods (and enable some grafical features in the launcher).

Hi,

Followed the steps to get FS2 running on a fedora12 64bit.

I only had to install following packages :

libopenal1-soft.i386
libSDL-1_2-0.i386

I used symbolic links to safe some disk space for the movies :
cd data/movies
ln -sf ../../data2/* .
ln -sf ../../data3/* .

I haven't played yet, but the game starts and the intro is playing.

I'm in the progress of upgrading to FC14. Will post the results for both 32 and 64 bit.

Just out of curiosity, can you install The Babylon Project without Free Space 2? I tried following these steps with the babylon project, and it started, but would crash when I started a campaign. (I have bought FS2, but it would be nice to install The Babylon Project without having to install it first).

Thanks.

Although I've read that the TBP is completely stand-alone, I think that might only apply to Windows (and perhaps Mac). I certainly could not get TBP alone to work without the FSO executable on my 32-bit Ubuntu 11 machine. You don't need FS2 if you only want to install the Babylon 5 Project.

However, although outcast1's instructions to install FSO worked perfectly for me, his instructions to install TBP unfortunately did not work for me. Here's what I did to get TBP up and running.

1. I followed outcast1's instructions to install FS2 and FSO at the beginning of this thread. (As well copying over the movie files).

2. Downloaded The Babylon Project from http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.220 (file: http://freespacemods.net/request.php?220 ). Unzipped it into its own directory, which I cleverly named TheBabylonProject.

3. I went to my FreeSpaceOpen directory and copied over the fs2_open_3_6_12_INF_r executable.

4. Download the Zathras mod from http://freespacemods.net/download.php?view.654 (file: http://freespacemods.net/request.php?654) and extracted it to the TheBabylonProject directory.

5. Moved the TBP launcher from the FreeSpaceOpen directory to the TheBabylonProject directory.. (When you download the YAL archive, you get the TBP launcher, as well as the Wing Commander and the Beyond the Red Line launcher, so when you extract the YAL tar into the FSO directory, all four launchers should appear).

6. Run the TBP launcher and select fs2_open_3_6_12_INF_r as the executable, then select the Zathras mod.

7. You should be good to go!
