I have no idea how 2D radar works in a 3D world. I can't find people using the radar. I'm in that very early mission in Freespace 1 where you need to destroy the ships in the asteroid field. I jut fly around randomly and hope to run into someone. I gave up after 15 minutes. I had 5 ships remaining to destroy and I could no find them.
I only have FS2 installed atm, but how it works is the radar is separated into 5 quadrants. The middle quadrant is your field of view. The four outlying quadrants represent the area outside your field of view. The closer a dot representing an object is to the outer edge of one of those quadrants the closer that object is to being directly behind you.

So, just get the dot you want into the middle of the radar.
I have no idea, it seems somehow intuitive for me. That's funny actually. :')

Follow these instructions to get 3D radar alongside other MAJOR improvements:

EDIT, aah, its FS1, sorry. -_- You can always Install FS2 and then FS1 mod.

Thanks, got it all figured out now!
It can be confusing at first compared to 3D ones if you've only known those, but once you hear the theory behind how it works it's easy, and imo, much easier to read than a 3D at a glance.

I agree. I've tried the 3D radar in FSO, but I've switched back to the original one. 3D radar looks nicer, but when you're in the middle of a tense battle, the original one is simply more efficient. The only drawback with this 2D radar is that a ship right behind you can "jump" from a quadrant to another very quickly, which can be disturbing at first.

Yea, it needed a little nodule at the bottom for ships directly behind you, but eh.
