Hi all
As above, got this classis from gog.com but the text is hard to read in game, want to change up the resolution.
Any ideas?

I'd settle for being able to run it in a window - any ideas anyone? I've tried the usual alt+enter. On a wide-screen LCD monitor it looks pretty bad stretched out, which is a shame as it'd be a great looking game if the resolution is right ...
I understand that older games were not meant for hi-res LCD's so the gfx and fonts are unlikely to scale gracefully, but there should be a way to run the game in a smaller window to get close to original resolution?

Don't think you can change the resolution from within the game, (other than setting the detail to the highest.)
The thing to remember is that when these games first came out, we were playing them on 14 inch CRT monitors :-)

you can try launching the FreeSpace2.exe (the game is run by FS2.exe remember ? :) ),which is the original launcher, then click setup and if you're lucky maybe you'll be able to set other resolutions than 1024x768 :)
or far better, install fs2open, then you should be able to set any resolutions (in the fs2open launcher) including wide-screen ones:

Bah - I thought you were onto something there with fs2open, I got as far as downloading it before realising that I've got freespace 1, not 2! :(
I bought freespace 1 instead of 2 as that's the one with nostalgia factor for me, fs2open looks great though, and it turns out freespace 2 is now open source and free to download?
I'd already tried freespace.exe looking for extra setup options - it gives you a choice of 'direct3d' or 'no direct3d' - and that's about it!
Well, I'd searched everywhere for software or tips or hacks and tried everything else I could think of. I was about to give up when I remembered my Dell LCD has a 1:1 pixel mapping mode, so at last I can play the game without any distortion - maybe I should go a step further and dust off that 14" CRT ;)

Somewhere there is a mod that puts all the Freespace 1 missions into Freespace 2, so do a google for it and hope for the best! :)

in that case you can indeed do what UK_John says, use the fs2open automated installer to install fs1 mod into FS2, it's complete port of fs1, including original cutscenes
and even the main menu and with better textures

Hey, that's great! Worked for me ... not sure this is a great advert for GOG though ...
Now I've got freespace 1 and 2 looking better than the originals ever did, plus a load of other extras, and the only thing GOG's had to do with that is its helpful forum members ;)
I guess freespace is a special case though.

Yeah, in retrospect though I wish I'd shown my support for them with a different game - I'd want to encourage them to bring out games which haven't already been released for free ... Especially when their selling point is that they've patched the games to work on a modern OS, but they haven't done as good a job as the open source community. A bit of a scandal, imo.

Freespace 2 is opensource, but is *not* free to download.
The Community (hard-light.net) used to offer the game for download since it was for all intents and practices abandoned by the publisher. However ever since GOG came onto the scene, HLP has been behind them with force in tour.
We still offer the upgraded executables and in-game media for download - with a handy installer to ease your troubles: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ - but we no longer condone any form of "distribution" of the original game.
