Basically the title. While in the menus the game is almost unplayable it is so laggy. In the mission briefings the audio is awful. While in the actual game it seems to run fine without problem, which is the weird part.

I have read numerous threads but they all point to external sites and are rather confusing. So I figured I would make a thread and hopefully have 1 solid answer to fix my problem(s).

I hope to get this working as I played this as a child and loved it so much, I want that warm and fuzzy feeling again!

Thanks,

Kyle

So one solution is to play FS1 through the FSOpen engine. You download the FSO engine over your Freespace 2 game and then download FSport which is the port of FS1 into the FSO engine. You can play either with the advanced, new graphics at high resolution or the older assets at classic game resolution.

Other solutions: try fiddling with the graphics and audio settings in the pre-setup menu. In particular, you can download a glide wrapper and change your method drawing graphics to glide (I wouldn't have thought that would affect menus, but maybe). I'm not sure about audio. I've seen people fix problems with unreadable text, but these are new to me. :/ Good luck!

You make the first option sound so simple but when I googled all of that it came to the site where I download it and 25 other download links. Any specific ones I download just for FS1 (I'll worry about FS2 later)? It probably is simple but when it comes to this stuff (mods, etc), I am not very tech savvy.

Thank you,

Kyle

For the first option it requires Freespace 2 first - the FSO engine is an open source engine built from Freespace 2's released code.

instructions for Windows:

that gets you the FSO engine working. Then you would have download FSport and you would be able to play Freespace 1. The number of steps look worse than they really are (they used to have an automated installer, but it no longer works and they working on a new one), but I can understand if you don't want to go down that path.
