I realize that this isn't probably the best place to ask, but I've read of other people not having problems with FS1 in Windows 7, so maybe the retail disks aren't that much different from the GoG version.

Anyway, I'm running an Alienware M11x R2, and no matter what I do, the game crashes out on me without actually running. It tries to go fullscreen, then kicks back and says the program is not responding. Originally installed from the double pack with Silent Threat, also tried with the 1.06 patch.

It's actually not too dissimilar to what I ran into with the GoG version of Outcast, although a restart seemed to fix that little problem. Not so here. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, it would certainly be awesome. Otherwise, I may end up having to go for FS2 and do the open-source thing, although I'd rather play FS1 as intended. :P

EDIT: Got it. Apparently, I needed to add a custom resolution (640x480 8-bit) under my graphics properties and restarting. Color corruption was then solved via switching to Direct3D rendering.

Now, to consider FreeSpace 2 anyway. I always wanted to give it a shot, and by all accounts it's better than the first.

I suggest buying FS2 off GOG, installing the Freespace Open engine, and playing FSPort, which is basically the FS1 campaign înside the improved FSO engine.

All you problems should go away, and if you install the Media VPs (which I think your computer should handle) your gaming experience should be much better.
