I can't make it start.

There is no error message. Just no start at all.

I seem to have the same issue. The game audio someitmes will play in the background, but all I see is my desktop.

This asks for the FreeSpace 2 installer, which the OP (and I) have FS1.

With the Freespace 2 main assets you can also play FS1.

The minimum requirements for this game in this day in age is a Monitor or TV that supports 640X480 resolution natively. It's the only restriction. Sorry :( everything else you read is bull crap.
