I notice that GOG doesn't list either Freespace or Freespace 2 as being Windows 7 compatible. I am running Windows 7 64 bit on a dual core system with an ATI 5670 video card and onboard sound if that matters.

Do the vanilla versions of the games work with Windows 7 without issues? I'm wondering if GoG hasn't gotten to testing that yet or if there are problems. I kind of wanted to play them vanilla for openers and look into the mods after but maybe that isn't an option?

Lastly, if I do decide to just use FSO from the very start, I am guessing that works with Win7 by this point in time? If you do start of with FSO, is there any need to even buy the first Freespace? I seem to recall they had released the original campaign and even the expansion redone for FSO and what you had to own was Freespace 2? Is that correct?
I can't confirm whether or not the vanilla game works in Windows 7, but Freespace Open definitely does, as I play it often and also have Windows 7 64 bit. You should definitely just install FSO right away, as it fixes a ton of bugs, pretties up the graphics a lot and includes a lot of mod campaigns. As for question 2, FSO includes FSPort which for all intents and purposes is a remake of Freespace 1. So you only need to buy Freespace 2 from GOG in order to play both via FSO. Again, I'm confirming from experience here.

Thanks very much for the info. I guess I will just start with FSO then particularly where it fixes bugs. :-)

Sorry for bumping an older thread, but I am actually in exactly the same situation as you (well, I'm getting my ATI 5670 card this week!!), and I've heard lots about this game, so I was wondering how your experience with it is so far. Thanks!

Sorry I am not much help myself. I did buy the game based on the comments made above and plan to use FSO when I get around to it but I have not yet gotten around to it. I still haven't played my Wing Commander games yet either! Too many games, not enough time!

There's a brand new version of FSO coming out quite soon!

Cool! Maybe procrastinating pays off after all. :-)
