Okay, I swear the controller worked fine with the game when I first installed it a couple of months ago, but now that I tried it again after installing GOG Galaxy... I find that the game doesn't detect joystick movement in any other direction than LEFT.

This also applies on the controller setup screen, so it's not that the controller hasn't been properly configured in-game. The controller also works just fine in other games and when I calibrate it.

It´s a known problem. The last update changed the main engine of the game and it broke everybody´s control config. I personally recommend deleting that config file (you can save a copy previously), restarting the game, and using the keyboard to reconfigure the pad controls. (At least that´s what I did).

The game plays a lot better now, at a smooth 60fps, so I recommend replaying it!
