As a person highly involved in the Freedom Force modding community, I would highly recommend the FFX 3 mod for FFvTTR.
It adds hundred of new powers and attributes to the game including many that are highly customizable in ways that the default ones just aren't. It also includes the EZ Scripting system, allowing people to create their own stories without using confusing Python scripting, and EZ AI, allowing both autogenerated and customized AIs for your custom built heroes and villains.
For more information on Freedom Force and FFvTTR modding, I would recommend the community forums at Freedom Reborn.
Seconded! Most users in the Freedom Reborn community use FFX rather than the vanilla game.
Because modding (thousands of character meshes, skins and character profiles, dozens of story arcs and maps, plus plenty of visual effects and voice packs) is the true heart of the Freedom force series. Hopefully the euro version on GOG will be mod-friendly.
(“Confusing Python scripting”? Cat, if Python wasn't so nice, it'd sue you!)
Didn't know you were a fellow goger, ep.
Anyhow, the confusing Python comment was merely aimed at users who have no experience at coding, as I find Python rather easy to use.
But yeah, there's some concern now that the version coming here could be the badly altered Digital Jesters version released only in Europe that was altered so as to make modding of any kind nearly impossible. Hopefully, it's the US version or the identical budget European version, which are very mod friendly.
Full disclosure--both of us were involved in the current FFX version to some extent, but we were fans of it back when the original creator was working on it.

Is the project still going?
BTW, if you want, I can gift a GOG-copy of FF for you; perhaps you'll be interested in checking the compatibility or something :).

How is the integration of this?
Probably going to grab FF2, but not sure about this mod. All that content sound shiny, but does it integrate well with the original campaign? Or is it all extras for modders and new chars and the like?
I ask because I did play FF2 a while back, and custom characters were WAY overpowered compared to the core guys, so I would prefer to stick with the core cast (and maybe a few from this mod, if they integrate well).
I bought it and I loaded it up with the mod. I think it works, but I have never used this before. I loaded up a new game just fine. Is there anything else to look for?

A bit of both. The mod runs in its own separate shortcut and includes a modified version of the main campaign, with FFX powers added to some of the main cast. There are no new characters per se, but lots of nifty new goodies for the old cast. The Ant, for example, can actually summon his giant ants from the first game, Minuteman can leap across the screen, Alchemiss can astrally project, among many other tweaks.
Custom characters can also have all the FFX goodies and there's a ton of options added for the Rumble Room. Some people even like to create characters and just watch them fight using the new options.
As for development, not actively as such, but if anyone comes up with anything really cool, it will probably make its way into the mod.

Has anyone used this with Windows 7?

FFX 3 should work in any system that is compatible with FFvTTR.

Thank you for the reply.

I will have to look some more, as I downloaded the latest version from the website and it is apparently missing the actual execution file.

What it did install, does not find my correct custom folder and I did not see a way to change that, other than also copying files and creating a directory that matches where FFX wants to look for files.
Yes, the directory that gog uses is different than the one the installer was designed for.

The installer should create a new serious of folders to correspond to the expected directory. Just find the new ffx mod folder it will put there and cut and paste it to your main game directory.

Now find the shortcut that should be in that folder, and right click on it and select properties. It will show you what it points to under the section "target", which will be the game's main exe folder, but in the wrong place, with some additional stuff on the end. Simply alter the directory to point to GOG's install folder instead and start the game using that shortcut. Like most mods, this one does not install its own .exe; it uses the games main one, which is simply not where the shortcut is expecting it to be.

I actualy OWN the discs myself Both FF and FFvthe 3rd reich but i had no idea the mod was out there and they are still very active within the community :) and why not. This game is CLASSIC in its own right the story is solid the mechanics well the vanilla ones for both the first and second were not as hot BUT once patched they were just fine :) I played it then STILL play it on my top high end win 7 64 pc. And ill probably play it till i die LOL. This is definately one of the golden age classics for sure. of course the customization is really what helps :)
