I thought it was the first game plus some kind of expansion then found out it's a continuation. My question is do I need to play the first one to enjoy this??

The first game would certainly help, but really I think you could enjoy it on it's own quite well. The game pretty much starts with the team reforming all over again and introduces everything over. So long as you are familiar with silver and golden age comics, I think you will be just fine.
Cool.
I'm not familiar with the Silver or Golden age of comics tho but I bought it just to experiment.
And besides it was this or Duke Nukem.
Well expect lots of

A: General cheeziness
B: Over the top anti-nazi propaganda

Indeed. It's a classic comic book fan's dream taken digital form.
I never played the first, and I just have to say WOW this game is amazing. I feel as though I bought this brand new at the quality of gameplay and graphics. It's like Baldurs Gate meets City Of Heroes. I love it.

Baldur's Gate meets City of Heroes. Hm. That is a very interesting yet strangely apt way to put it I would maybe say.

Reminds me a lot of Neverwinter Nights as far as the game engine goes. Neverwinter Nights meets 1960s DC Comics cartoons (or the Adam West Batman show). A match made in nostalgia heaven. =)

Found the original in a thrift shop for $2 complete in box. I had to hunt down the patch and tweak a couple settings to get it to run, but it was completely worth it. Bought the sequel here the same evening.
