All the download links on the website and in GOG galaxy seem to have been deliberately disabled.
I am on Mac and have heard this game is easy to port so pretty keen to try but no luck even beginning the install.

I'm on a Mac too and I own Freedom Force on GOG. I just went to my games page (using Chrome) and started downloading Freedom Force without any problems. I'm not sure what your issue might be, I think you should contact GOG support:
