First, how are events where you are? I do not watch the news here as I do not trust it- if they say "sunny and clear today" I take an umbrella. Hope things are at least somewhat less horrid.

Second, what will be the new technical specifications for the game, i.e. what will be required to run it? SCUMMVM will no longer be able to do it.

Hello.
The war is still going on. Cities are being shelled. Kyiv is shelled almost every day. Sometimes it's very loud, sometimes it's very scary when a kamikaze drone flies by the house. We don't get enough sleep for a very long time because of this.
But life goes on. We try to work all the time. Sometimes we are completely emotionally exhausted because of all the shelling, because everyone has a friend who has suffered from the war, or who is now at the front, or who died at the front. It's all very scary.

As for the specifications of the new engine, yes, the minimum system requirements will increase slightly, but not critically. I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised ;)

- diary text manager - done

Sorry the crummy war is still going on. Human race, phooey.

Since SCUMMVM will no longer work with "Foxtail" as they will not work with Unity older devices will not likely be able to handle it, unless whatever that Unity engine needs is no worse than what the two "Running Sheep" games used- then 3D-Analyze can deal with the graphic glitches.

I'm working on a game of my own- a text game (with some ASCII graphics) using the Adventure Gaming Toolkit AGT. I modified the engine so it can do much more and most of its weaknesses are gone. Funny thing: with my current skill level I could do a text version of "Foxtail!"

Anyway, take care. Hopefully broken friendships can be regained, as unlikely as that seems.

A friend recently informed me of a strange fee system Unity may be imposing on developers- something to do with install/reinstalls.

Since I tinker around and do this frequently...

What is this about? If it's what it seems to be this could be a serious problem for small developers.
Apparently it works by imposing fees for each new install.

The dangers here are obvious if this is true- first, as that friend pointed out it would act as spyware.

Another is piracy. You know I was tinkering around trying to get this game running on the ancient Sony VAIO back in 2018- but the ASUS' Steam version could not be used, and posts were made before I purchased the GOG version. So how was I doing this? SCUMMVM 2.2 was not out just yet.

I had downloaded a pirated standalone version.

Problem is, it still had to be installed. If Unity is going to do what I've been told then you would be charged for installs from pirated versions. You actually LOSE money on that rather than just making nothing.

I also tinker around using 3D-Analyze and SwiftShader 2.1. These intercept a game's rendering calls and either mainly fool the game into thinking the computer has different hardware (3D-Analyze) or simply use its own software-based renderers (SwiftShader.) The latter is how I directly got Chapters 1 & 2 running, and then indirectly Chapter 3 (it gets SCUMMVM working). Problem is, each install may believe a different device is being used, and if done directly is it possible the game believes it was copied and is running on something else?

If a certain tier has to reached it would mean you would have to hope the game never becomes too successful or else, and can that number be lowered?

If you cannot pay the fees then what? How would Unity enforce this fee requirement? Would the game lock up?

My friend also pointed out that someone could create a script to install/uninstall, and if it has to be a unique install the game could be fooled into believing it's a different device each time if the hacker has the skill.

You must look into this. If this is true then beware.

It was planned to happen basically as you describe, but the widespread backlash forced Unity to re-evaluate, see e.g.
this ArsTechnica article for the current preview. Most importantly, fees are now capped at 2.5% of the game's revenue; there's no risk of bankruptcy, don't worry.
The fact that they thought they could do what I described in the first place would make me suspicious of any such promises made afterwards. If it took a backlash to make them "reconsider" then they are NOT trustworthy, and let's face it, most independent developers do not have the money or legal firepower to stand up to a company like Unity.

Is that fee an absolute, or can they change it at any time? What of any other conditions? Again, Gingertips absolutely MUST investigate, if anyone there knows a good lawyer willing to look into this for no pay then they should absolutely have him look any contract over.

If I was a developer- well, actually, I am working on a DOS text game I'm hoping will a) actually be finished and b) can sell it here and on Steam- I would wonder if I had a light saber over my head when using an engine. I am using the antique AGT engine so I have nothing to worry about, but Unity is a whole different universe.

The reason I advised using whatever "Inherit the Earth" used was simply because it seems to work on almost anything and SCUMMVM has that base covered- therefore the pool of potential customers almost equals whoever wants to buy the game. My Dutch relatives told me after the Second World War poverty was a serious problem and money will be one for the Ukraine- therefore anything which could endanger anyone in Gingertips living in the Ukraine war zones financially will have a terrible effect later on. So again, make sure whatever you get involved in cannot later turn around, change, and cost you dearly.
