I bought the gold box set and am playing with Unlimited Adventures and am loving it.

I'm experiencing a minor issue...
Editing maps and art requires I work with a 256 color pcx file.

Thing is, no one supports that anymore. Check out why... limited color, and most tiny thumbnails have more pictures.

Thing is, for this product... I need it.

So, I'm asking if you can recommend, or failing that, carry some very cheap and primitive paint style program that will edit pcx files. I all but guarantee... you'll need a dos emulator.

I think this is the craziest thing I ever have... or will... ask you guys for.
Have you checked out the FRUA forums at http://ua.reonis.com/index.php?
They probably have a solution to your problem, since there are lots of designs with new art.
You could try to use any paint program and save as gif or bmp or png and before and after editing convert with Irfan View or something similar?
It looks like ImageMagick's "convert" program can handle .pcx files. Try using it to convert it to a format you can work with, editing it, and then converting it back and see if that works.

Try using GIMP
I haven't done this in a long time, but from what I remember, converting pics with IrfanView worked pretty well in most cases.
GIMP (at least 2.8, not sure about earlier versions offhand) does appear to support PCX.

It's at the very bottom of the list ("ZSoft PCX Image").
