So, I'm getting ready to restart Gateway to the Savage Frontier for the third time, but I have some questions.

My party is composed of :

1 human ranger
1 human paladin
1 dwarf fighter/thief
2 elves fighter/magic user
1 human cleric

Is this party ok? Can it succeed in both Savage Frontier games?

Second question: is it worth it to dual-class the ranger and paladin into a a magic-user and cleric in the second game?

Third question: Should I bring along NPCs like Krevish or will that slow character progression by taking a share of the experience from battles? I Since I have two multi-classed characters I'm wondering if it'll take them too long to acquire important spells like Fireball.

Thanks in advance for the help!

SummonerYuna,

working of my memory here, so don't blame me if my memory fails me :P

The XP mainly depends on your difficulty settings and encounter type. Higher setting, more XP. and having one extra could mean using a higher setting.
Dual class, IIRC I always went with dual class for my magic users. I felt otherwise they would be too easy targets. Or better to say, they never stayed alive long enough :D The AI is going after any magic user/cleric, kind of prime target. Anyone correct me if I am wrong there ;)

Ranger???? Don't remember having had one of those in my party.
Paladin: If you use Paladin (IIRC) don't do dual class, exact reason I can't remember anymore, might be leveling, but I admit I can't remember anymore.

Cleric: IIRC I always had two ;)
Thief: Do they not loose their ability in dual class mode??? (IIRC)
It's OK for the first game which is quite easy.
For the second game the two Elf F/M may suffer from low Fighter levels due to racial caps.
I'd make one of them a single class Mage to get max effect from spells like Fireball, and to get the spells quicker.

Dualing the Ranger may be a good idea, but the games may not last long enough for him to be useful. The Savage Frontier games don't reach the same high levels as the FR and Krynn games.
Dualing a Paladin to a Cleric is a waste IMO, since a Paladin is already a Fighter/Cleric.

Definitely bring along NPCs. The story assumes you do.
