Is there a way to ID the items that you pick up in Dungeon Hack? Other than checking your AC/THACO when equipping an item, I can't really find a way to do so. The same holds true for consumable magic items. Any ideas?
mage chars have identify spell

and theres a mirror that will id items held n your hand but you need to have it in your hand to use it
and it has limited charges

i think you can blind equip and check how your ac changes for armor, bracers, cloaks, rings, etc
not sure if weapons will show the change but you can try it
though blind equipping items and checking thac0/ac wont help you discover other effects of the items
If a magical consumable has an effect on you, while you consume it, you will recognize it the next time, that you pick it up.
There's the Improved Identify spell, which you start with if you are a (non-triple-class) Mage or Bard.

Triple-class mages do not start with the spell, but can learn it from a scroll, provided the game decides to spawn one, of course.

There's also Detect Magic, which won't identify the item but will at least tell you if it is magical, and True Seeing will as well; True Seeing will also tell you if an item is cursed.

Also, the game handles potions like traditional items; the effect of a potion with a specific description may be different between different playthroughs, but during the same run, two potions with the same description will have the same effect. For example, if a blue potion heals you, all blue potions are healing potions of some sort.

How does the Improved Identify spell work? I cast it and pick up items but they don't say what they are until I use them.

I'm pretty sure you need to do it the other way around, and IIRC the item need to be in your hand. (Not sure what happens if you have unidentified items in both hands; I suspect this *might* let you identify both with one spell, but I'm not sure.)
yeah improved identify will id items in both hands
