I was wondering if anyone knows how to change the active character on Gateway to the Savage Frontier?

I assume you mean in adventure/movement mode, instead of the tactical combat map, right? As long as you aren't in Move mode, you can select characters by using your arrow keys. The topmost character in the party is the default one for talking and such, so rearrange your party by selecting and moving them.
