Brand new owner of a 2020 Macbook Air. Just installed the Gold Box games on the computer, every single one works except for Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures, it always fails to launch. Any idea what is going on here?

Using a Apple MacBook Air (Retina, 13", Early 2020) Could this have something to do with the 32 / 64 bit issue? Any chance GoG could update Unlimited Adventures to make it compatible with 64 bit?

Are you running it through DosBox?

And maybe this has something to do with my problem too?

GOG.com: There's already a 64bit DOSBox port—DOS–era games will eventually be supported. Windows–era games are gone—Catalina breaks Wine emulation and no announcement has been made for 64bit support by the Wine Team. For newer games, GOG.com will need new builds from the developers—doubtful if we ever get to see those, especially for indie games where developers don't have the resources to go back and port their released games. Newly released games are often Windows-only.

I don't know how you see this picture, but it looks pretty bleak to me.

I am not familiar at all with the Macintosh OS, so this may not apply. On Windows when you launch one of the Gold Box games thru Galaxy, it actually runs DosBox (a DOS emulator). You can configure the emulator thru the .conf files. If it's the same case on the Mac, most likely it's a configuration issue either in the .conf file, or you will need to run the setup to adjust settings (probably sound related).

The trouble here is that the emulator fails to launch completely, I press the play button - the game icon bounces for a second on my launcher before disappearing and then nothing happens. GOG refreshes and the play button is clickable again.
Via GOG Support:

Hello

After investigating it turns out that the game wasn't updated yet to be compatible with macOS 10.15.
The current version is 32-bit and will not work.
Our Product Team is now aware and will update the game, but I'm unable to provide an EA.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

For now, you should be able to run it under a 64-bit version of DOSBox instead of going through GOG's launcher.

By the way, you really should include more than just the game title in your topic title; at least use a title like "Unlimited Adventures doesn't work on new Macbook".

I'm 3 years late to the conversation here, but I thought I'd reply with a solution just in case anyone else has this issue running FRUA on a Mac (until GOG get off their duffs and fix this officially).

1) Download an up-to-date version of DOSBox for MacOS.
2) Right-click on the DOSBox icon and select "Show Package Contents."
3) Navigate to Contents>MacOS.
4) Right-click on the DOSBox icon there and select Copy.
5) Navigate to wherever FRUA is on your Mac.
6) Right-click on the FRUA icon and select "Show Package Contents."
7) Navigate to Contents>Resources>dosbox>MacOS>.
8) Delete the existing DOSBox application and right-click in the folder, then select Paste from the drop-down menu.

Now you should be able to double-click on the FRUA icon or launch it from the Galaxy app. Sheesh, 3 years and GOG can't be bothered to do this themselves? Really? Anyway, hope that helps whoever needs it.

The suggested fix works as indicated on my MacBook Pro (os 12.6 "Monterey"). Very happy to be able to try the game !

Many thanks,
