Is that supposed to work or a guess? It's not working for me.

You attack by right-clicking on your character's weapon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Casting spells works in a similar manner - right-click the spell book or holy symbol, select the level and the spell from the list.

Remember, only the top two characters in the portrait area can attack with melee weapons. The back two can only attack with ranged and spells. =)
