Can't believe I found this out after the game has been out 25 years.
On the medusa level, as soon as you have found both the Stone Dagger and the Hilt of the Talon (otherwise this is pointless), go all the way back down to the priest level and enter the portal with it.
Go forward until you see a door. You might have to defeat 1 frost giant but if you're quick it can be done without a single kill.
As soon as you are on the door, turn around, talk the the frost giant king, get the sword blade and go back to the teleporter :)
I believe the developers allowed this because if you do the Frost Giant level normally and accidently fall into a pit, you cannot go back there the normal way via the medusa level; Dran's glass walls are still up.
