Does anyone have experience with modding Flatout? I was browsing flatout joint, which has lots of spiffy-looking mods (particularly new cars). I attempted to follow the instructions posted there, which seemed to be either adding "bfs" files and creating a patch.ini, or using a third-party app (bfsunpack.exe) that would unpack the bfs file. I tried the both methods, and was unsuccessful.
The process seems to require FO 1.1, which apparently should have a few files (filesystem.ini, patch.ini, some other) that I don't see in the GOG version. Also, the GOG .exe does not report the file version, though the main page on GOG does say it's 1.1. I'm wondering if it needs these .ini files for modding to be successful.
Anyway, if anyone knows how to install some of the modded cars I'd appreciate knowing how. There appears to be a wealth of extra vehicles available...

It would seem as if the patch files are somehow merged into some other file (i. e. the launcher). I tried to manually patch it to the latest version, but after doing that, the game will ask for a cd, which you don't have.
I think it's impossible to mod GOG.com version of FlatOut with anything that requires those .ini files.

Ah, too bad, if true. If anyone determines otherwise, let us know!
Thanks...

Not quite, the retail game (if you bought it on disc) is installed in what's called "Packed" mode by modders, IE all the game files are packed into the .BFS files, and then the Filesystem.ini and Patch.ini files tells the game to find the files in thease .BFS packages.
The GOG version however is running "Unpacked", it has all the same files (including the patch it seems), they are just all placed in the "data" folder instead of in .BFS files (the "data" folder does not exist in the retail game, and the BFS files do not exist in the GOG release, same files, different way of storing them).

There is a workaround that works for most of the mods, obviously, if the mod was released for both a Packed and Unpacked version of the game, you just need to get the version for Unpacked and it should work just fine.
However, most mods have been released for the Packed version, but that can be fixed, go grab the "BFSunpacker" app, this program will unpack the contence of the BFS files, and then you can manually move the files into the Data folder yourself, and then it should work.
The only mods that wont work, are thouse that come with an elaborate installer that tries to detect if you have the propper "common1.bfs" and "common2.bfs" files, thease will fail to install because you dont have thouse files.
But again, you might be able to find an Unpacked version of them, and that one should work.
ok i click on the flatout.exe to turn on my game and... BAM! it says you do not have a data/language/version.ini when i actually, do but its just called version. but its a notepad like file and on my computer its called version, on my brothers computer its called version.ini but its the same file... anyway i looked into this a bit and people say i need a filesystems.ini to make it read my version.ini but I DO NOT HAVE a filesystems.ini soooo where do i get one? can anyone post a download or something to a filesystems.ini thats all i need. and i dont want all that shiznit about modding and whatnot i just need a straight foreward answer no backwards round about fancy computer modder shit.
You cannot use the Filesystem.ini file, even if you could find it somewhere and download it, it wont work, it's a file that declares the BFS packages, and thouse packages do not exist in the GOG version, hence they point to nothing and nothing will happen, the mod wont work.
What you need to do is unpack the mod, go here and grab this: http://flatoutjoint.com/index.php?Itemid=27&func=fileinfo&id=106&option=com_remository
Use that app to unpack the .BFS file(s) that came with the mod, much like you would use Winzip to unpack a .Zip file, and it will extract the files from the .BFS file(s) to the location you set, and then it's just like installing any other mod, you drag the files into the correct folders in the game (the subfolders of ..\Flatout\Data), no different from installing a Half-Life mod at that point.
It's really not difficult to do, it's no different from Unzipping a Zip file, only it's called a Bfs file instead, and you use a different app to unpack it, it's really no more complicated than that.
Also, you can safely ignore the install instructions that came with the mod, they where written for a Packed version of the game, so they wont help you, you don't need thouse ini files it mentions, just ignore that, unpack the contence of the BFS, drag the files into the game, and BAM, it works (though make backups of any files it wants to overwrite if you want to uninstall the mod later).
