Hey all,

Downloaded and installed, but when I launch it usually gets a blank screen or the beginning of the SSI logo, then nothing. The sound and music works fine, and when I ALT-F4 to exit, I get a brief glance of the main screen before it exits.

The online support didn't yield any results, nor did going through the compatibility settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Exact same thing. Tried using dedicated GPU and Intel integrated and same results every time.
Similar for me. It instantly closes whenever I try and run it. I've tried doing resolution and colour compatibility, and it looks like it's going to run... then doesn't.

Done the bink download, cccp download, run with selected startup - no luck. Which is strange, because I can play the into vid straight using bink from the video directory with no problem
Same as gorbaz
Game starts, i get a black screen for half a second, then nothing, it just goes back to desktop (or install location if im not using shortcut)

- running windows 7 64 bit

Nothing i've found works any suggestions?

Using Windows 8.1 64 Bit, game works for me when Google Chrome is closed ! Don't know why :p
Also Try this from the GOG help pages. (This helped me anyway)

In late January, NVIDIA introduced in tis drivers the Supersampling option. It essentially renders the game in up to quadruple resolution, and scales it back down to your actual resolution. This is a specific anti-aliasing method, rarely implemented in games (Witcher 2 was an exception, and called it "Ubersampling").
It is enabled by default on GTX 980 cards, and optional on others.
It has been known to cause launch issues with older games, as it forces them to use an unsupported resolution.

To disable this option, right-click your desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel". Go to "3D Settings" and find the "DSR - Factors" option. Un-select all possible settings and confirm. This should change the setting to "Off". Apply the changes and check if this resolved the issue.

I gave that a go, but turns out it was already switched off for me.

Running Windows 7, x64.

Tried turning off videos in the .ini settings, but no difference
Tried removing the initial videos from the folder, but no change
Tried all compatibility settings. Same as above
Tried all the above also. No DSR option listed in my Nvidia panel.
Game loads up and either CTDs midway through the SSI movie (this locks the resolution at 640x480 and just a black screen) or will play the movie fine and then go to a black screen for a second or two before getting a "application has stopped working" notification.

It's a bit of a bummer really. Shadow of the Horned Rat and Chaos Gate look to work right off the bat, but this was pretty much the main event for me :( I had a physical copy of this years ago and NEVER got it to work (XP machine see)....So I've been kind of itching to play this for...a while.

Ahh.. Forgot to say, Windows 8.1 64bit.
Laptop with intel gfx and Nvidia 840m

Ok...So..Changing the video option in config file
DoVideo=1 to DoVideo-0 makes it so it actually gets to the main menu.

Errrr...:|

Changing the video option in config file to zero worked for me as well. However I tried a quick battle and there are pauses between every lil action you make. But it is working now...
Tried the config change to no avail
Same deal here. It plays the SSI cinematic, goes black, and then crashes.

System is:

Windows 8.1 64-bit
Intel i7-4970k
GTX 460 1GB (most recent drivers)

If you haven't yet, try disabling the videos in the .ini file. It fixed it for me.

That seems to have worked. Interesting, I think running my CD copy in XP had the same issue with videos

I don't know if it's a format issue or if the internal video player in the game relies on some operating system thing that isn't common anymore.

I've seen the issue on both Windows and Linux systems.
OK. So I tried playing this on my Win 7 desktop (64bit OS, i7 960, 6GB ram, Radeon R9 290) and funnily enough it works right off the bat. Videos work, game plays lovely.

I try it on my laptop (HP envy 15 Win 8.1 64-Bit, I5 4700, 8GB ram, Intel HD Gfx 4600/Nvidia 840M) and nope...Doesn't work.
Like I said in my previous post, SSI logo movie will run fine (95% of the time) and then show a black screen for around 2--3 seconds before crashing saying "Epic40k.exe has encountered a problem and has closed"
The other 5%, it will crash mid SSI logo, drop the desktop resolution to 640x480 and lock it to a single corner of the main desktop. You can get to task manager but ending the process doesn't work. You have to reboot the machine.

If you turn videos off via the config file (DoVideo=0), the game will load to the main menu and work fine (just no videos...which kind of kills the story so make single player kind of redundant).

Checking the event log for the crashes, it looks like I am having an issue with a windows file rather than the game itself.
Specifically the AcGenral.dll file which is for compatibility.

I'm still looking as I would really like to actually play this game on my laptop (which is where I play most of my GOG games).
