Any solutions? I have played with the compatability options, though most of them are greyed out for this game.

Error message reads

The instruction at 004749c4 referenced memory at 00040ab8
The memory could not be written

Im running windows 7

OK, I think I solved the problem. A wiki on the game had this to say
'The game will also crash if you return to desktop at any time during gameplay by pressing the Windows key or ALT-TAB, but won't crash if you do this at the main menu.'

It seems anything that returns you to desktop will crash the game, even pop up messages for running programs.
