Just a heads up for people who are having problems with Far Cry 1 running hot, despite their rigs being more than capable of running the game.

Far Cry has a nasty habit of not actually using VSYNC even if you turn it on; as such, it will use your full GPU to render hundreds of frames per second (my 940MX was getting 300+ FPS on low settings), even if you can't use that many. Elsewhere in this forum people recommended using the NVIDIA Control Panel to force VSYNC (for NVIDIA users, obviously), or trying to force VSYNC with programs such as D3DOverrider or nVidia Inspector.

Sadly, none of those worked for me. If you find yourself in a similar jam, you should try RivaTuner Statistics Server (commonly paired with MSI Afterburner for tracking FPS and CPU/GPU heat/performance). There's a nifty feature on the right-hand side of the window (Framerate Limit) which enables you to force a framerate limit for a specific game (see screenshot). So what I did was:

1) Open RivaTuner
2) Create a new profile for Far Cry (Green "Add" button, then find and select the "Launch Far Cry" shortcut)
3) Set the framerate limit to my monitor's refresh rate (60hz for me, yours may differ)
4) Run the game.

This correctly limited the number of frames rendered to 60 FPS, allowing me to run Far Cry on maximum settings with negligible GPU use and heat.

Silent Patch can also fix the VSYNC issue if you're playing in fullscreen. It also restores the land mass reflections in water and a few other things.

Certainly worth taking a look at!
RivaTuner StatisticsServer also removes the kind of microstutter that occurs in open areas and is especially noticable when Vsync is on. With RTSS keeping the framerate at 60 (in my case), the player's movement is smooth as butter, - at least in the GOG version of the game.

I was scratching my head over this. Let's see if it works for me. Thanks.
