Well, whilst I was running an Avast boot time scan I got a notification that one of Far Cry's level.pak files had an invalid CRC and might therefore be corrupt. The file in question is:

\Far Cry\Levels\Cooler\level.pak

The particular file inside the pak archive is \terrain\cover.ctc

So, on getting back into Windows I copied the level.pak file to another location, renamed it as level.zip so that I could open it in WinRAR and test the archive, and it too reported the same CRC error in the cover.ctc file.

I've Googled this and the same message shows up in a number of people's virus scans, so I'm wondering if this is normal for this file. Can anyone tell me if their copy is the same and if this is normal?

Note that I'm currently actually in the level Cooler at present and haven't had any issues so far.
This question / problem has been solved by Kunioimage
Come on guys, can anyone check their Far Cry installation to see if this is normal?
Is there nobody out there who can verify their copy of this single .pak file for me so that we can find out if the invalid CRC is in fact normal?
*bump*

I refuse to believe that nobody on this site can confirm this and therefore determine whether or not this is an issue. Come on guys!
I can confirm that the \terrain\cover.ctc file in \Far Cry\Levels\Cooler\level.pak has a CRC error. I tested using 7-zip.

Thanks for the confirmation. I've given you the solution. :)
korell,
on installing their retail version of far cry my friend reported getting a fatal error message 1603. We tried figuring out how to fix this but couldn't, so in the end I went into his game files copied & pasted all I could find to his hard drive in the correct path folder as if it were properly installed and it tricked the game into confirming & finishing the correct install.

Apart from that I've never actually come across anyone with the crc file problem. Not being able to install my retail version properly, I gave it to my friend (but I did warn him of the problems I had with it - still he insisted he wanted it, so I let it go).

After that I stumbled upon this wonderful site and haven't looked back!
I hope in time GOG will release the drm free Far Cry3 (without that stupid Uplay installer crap) - man that's such I nightmare!

Any more probs with your copy of Far CRy 1? There's heaps of great mods for it around. One of my faves is contest island invasion - try getting the latest version - really fun mod.
Hi Ubergurl1, thanks for the reply but you are a bit late - my last post on this thread was 17 months ago.

As for the CRC error, it wasn't causing any problems with the game. The game was running fine and I only came upon the CRC error when Avast scanned every file on my hard drive.

So really I was just after confirmation that it is normal (sometimes you can get files that purposely have flaws in them, say for security or copy protection or containing data that is used for alternative purposes to the rest of the file they are stored in) and Kunio confirmed the CRC error for me. Wouldn't be a bad idea for others to check too, but the fact that it plays fine and someone else has seen it, I'd say it is normal.

As for FarCry 3, yes, I'd love to see that on GOG at some point.
