I take it you don't even get to the ingame options menu. Is that right ?
You can try to apply XP SP2 or XP SP3 compatibility to the game's shortcut.
If that doesn't help, please post your specs.

How about your graphics card ?
Have you tried XP compatibility mode ? Right click the game's shortcut, choose properties, switch to the compatibility tab. The compatibility modes are there.
Have you tried installing it to the internal HD ? I mean, i guess it makes no difference for less demanding games, but with games like FarCry i'd expect better perfomance and less hassle if the game is installed on the internal HD.

It doesn't seem like your specs are the issue.
At this time, here's what i'd try:
- Make sure graphics drivers and directX files are up to date
- try to apply XP compatibility mode to the shortcut
- uninstall from ext HD and re-install on internal HD. I guess it's worth a try.
- take a look at the .cfg file. Maybe changing some of the options to 'low' will allow the game to at least boot into the menu.

I had to put all the options to low. Then it started. Thanks.

No problem. I'm glad that did it.
Have fun ;)

For me just setting the 'Lighting' to high or medium (I can not remember which) and leaving all other options on very high fixed the error.

Same for me. Setting the 'Lighting' to high and all the rest to very high did the trick. I'm using Win7 64bit.
For those who want run to FAR CRY under Windows 7 (may also work for Vista) with all the graphical settings MAXED OUT, just wait!!! (yes really, just wait).
1st, go to the FAR CRY CONFIGURATION TOOL and set everything accordingly.
Next, launch the game and wait for the splash to go to the main menu (it may seem to freeze at this point but just wait and it will eventually load).
Next load a checkpoint or start a new campaign. (again wait for loading screen to finish, it takes a while). If it crashes, just launch the game again.
Once you got it working, loading will now be much faster even if you restart your PC.
The moral of the story is that "Patients is a virtue" my fellow gamers; )

You have to download all the parts and make sure they are in the same folder before you run the setup.
