Hi, all

I am a bit confused with how 'perks' function in this game? I had the idea of not adding perks until upgrading if i know there is a better perk for the upgraded unit at that level... but weird things seem to happen in the game, first the perks for the old unit comes, then the perks for the new unit?? What is going on? Is it possible to make stronger units by skipping perks, not skipping perks, upgrading or not upgrading??

I recently decided to ask people for similar games to Galactic assault. The first one i tried was Battle Isle but i discovered that game was completely shit after buying it on GOG, Doh! Next game i was recommended was Fantasy Wars. The minute i started playing it i thought, "yea, now this is more like it". Perhaps the absolute shitness of battle Isle made the game look much better than it really is, but anyway, love it!

There is no way to skip picking a perk when you level up, or to save it for later.

Sadly, some perks only show up at certain levels too, so if you miss it it's gone (e.g. Master Brennok's +1 missile doesn't show up at level 9/10 if you didn't pick it before). In Elven Legacy, it was possible to even pick a perk that you could later get for free from an upgrade, which sucked on a first play through. Not sure if that is possible in Fantasy Wars.

There are a couple units that can pick up some decent skills by waiting to upgrade (usually movement/defense based skills), but for the most part, having units level up before upgrading gives them worse perks. I remember crossbows being different though. If you keep them as bowmen, you can give them the elven bow strings, which gives them +1 range, then upgrade them to crossbows, then arbs.

Try not to second guess yourself too much. Take the first play through on easy, and leave the completionist route for the second try.
Thanks for the reply despite my post being quite old!
