put unit in friendly village, castle : can only hire new units ? thanks

Guess your question is not relevant anymore but maybe this will help other people with a similiar question:
You can only rest with your units, if you are NOT in a friendly village, castle. If you are just out their on the fields, on the bottom left side of the screen there will be the Rest icon.
