Im lvl 4 and I am a melee fighter with high strength, the works and unarmed combat. I am working on getting a spiked knuckles to then use against harry. Whats a good strategy/character lvl to go after him?

I think I'm usually around level 5 or so when it comes time to deal with the watershed; I'll either try to sneak past Harry and fall back on talking my way out if he spots me or else just shoot my way through with a hunting/sniper rifle (starting with the outside guy).

For a close-in fighter, try sneaking (this can prevent some/all of the other super mutants from noticing the fight) and go for called shots - the eyes are the best target but if you can cripple his arm that laser rifle won't do him any good. One trick I've used on Deathclaws with an unarmed fighter is to sneak in, shoot at one from a good distance to get its attention (hopefully you hit, but mostly you want to draw it in and get it farther from the others) and then pummel it to death.

You may want to tackle the guy outside first so you can run for it if need be without having an enemy behind you.

Well Im now way past the watershed. I got the chip and am currently lvl 8. I need to get to lvl 9 so I can get bonus hand to hand attacks for an extra attack.

I am not really sure what to do to level up. Should I just join a caravan or something and gain exp there. I tried going to the cathedral but those guys are way too tough.
I've never really done much as a caravan guard, so I can't say how well that works for gaining xp. Depending on how many of the side quests you've done, it might be better to poke around the Hub, Boneyard or other places to see what turns up (quests, information, unwatched valuables, etc.) or maybe go talk to the Brotherhood. It's hard to say much without knowing what you've done so far, plus I wouldn't want to drop spoilers if this is your first play-through.

If I'm looking to grind for xp at this level, it's usually wandering south of the Hub for raider encounters (doubly good if you need small power cells for a energy pistol or power fist) or hunting Deathclaws.

Don't remember if other caravans even hire guards, but crimson caravan runs are ok way to travel to new places. The only bad thing being the schedules, I don't like waiting a week for a new caravan, so it's only ok for me if a new one is leaving the next day or so.

Anyway, it seems to always be about two semi-easy raider attacks and you have caravan guards helping you out.

If you're beginning and cash starved, there are many good things to be get.

Getting to a new place.
Getting some XP if you manage to kill some robbers.
Getting paid for the guard duty.
Getting decent loot from the dead robbers. (pistols, smgs, rifles)
