Hello all,
I was reading about fallout on wikipedia, and how before a patch, there was a time limit to defeat the mutants and beat the game. It said that the time limit was removed, however. I was wondering if the version I downloaded from gog.com had that time limit or not. If it helps, I downloaded it on the 26th of September. Also, please try to keep your answers as spoiler free as possible. I just reached necropolis the other day.
Thanks,
Alex, aka detfan

The version of Fallout 1 you got from GOG is patched to the latest offical version, 1.1. It is the european version, though, which is why in the lower right-hand corner of the main menu it says "Fallout 1.2", I think. The kids in the game were removed for this version, but they can be readded using a fan-patch.
The time limit to defeating the mutants indeed doesn't exist anymore in this version. Or, more precisely, it was increased to 13 years, according to Wikipedia. It is highly unlikely to reach this limit in a normal game, though ;)
From what I've heard the time you take still influences how much destruction the mutants cause after you have finished the first main quest. The time limit to this, finding the water chip, still exists in the patched version and can be seen when you open the Pipboy until you actually finish the quest.

It is worth of note that you can extend the initial 150 day limit by 80 days by telling the water traders where your vault is. In the unpatched version, that would mean that you had less time after completing the water chip quest, to get to the mutants, but like Syrion said, that limit has been increased to 13 years. So effectively you can extend the initial time limit to 230 days.
Syrion has the answer.
I'd also add while 150(230) days and other references sound quite low, it is far more than you should need.
Unless you have a specific character build that works against the game, or just want to explore it should not be an issue.

small quibble -- sending water to the vault via the water merchants actually increases the time limit by 100 days. and i'm sure you can do this as many times as you want, but it will increase the chance that someone else discovers the location of vault 13.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I really appreciate it.
