I want to get FO3 and NV the next time they're on sale but I can't decide whether Steam or GOG. Does anyone know if the GOG versions are as moddable? With VtMB they make it DRM free and they update it to be more compatible with modern computers, which is nice. But then they also want it to be workable out of the gate so they apply the unofficial patch to the base download making it incompatible with older mods that have their own version of the unoffical patch or require an older version of it. And then you have weird cases like Oblivion where the no CD version of the script extender as a dependency on Steam.

I don't want to deal with annoying problems just as the dead DRM Games for Windows Live but I don't play Bethesda games unmodded. Is the GOG version fine for mods?

I don't own the GOG version of the games, so I'm not speaking by personal experience, but I'm not aware of any problems modding them.

Check this thread.

For me, modding Oblivion seem to work better through GOG rather than the Steam version. Not sure if it's just my particular system setup or something else. I have yet to try the Fallout games through GOG though. I have stability issues with Fallout 3 from Steam, but I think that's more so due to particular mods I installed.
I have both F3 and FNV from GOG. Played F3 with about 80 mods, did every quest except for the DLC quests with not one problem except FOSE mods gave me trouble. Got the anti-stutter mod to work, though. FNV has been iffy for me and is on the back-burner for now, random freezes. Haven't played it with no mods, no Vanessa, no play. GOG or Steam makes no difference for modding as far as I have seen. I use GOG for these games because of LAA enabled and the other stability add-on which escapes me at the moment. Two less things to deal with. Trying to get the anti-stutter mod for FNV to work is not going well. Tried all the ini tweaks and still get freezes. Started with the last W10 update.

Ive modded the crap out of NV on GOG and it works as good as NV runs. I own all Bethesda Fallouts on steam and just NV on GOG. No issues with either one. If anything the DRM free version probably is more future proof and thats the versions I prefer to play.
Just pick one mate. They're exactly the same.
After getting the GOG versions of both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, I never again used my Steam versions.
All the mods work the same on either version. And my TTW setup is working perfectly with the GOG games.

NVSR is broken on Windows 10 ever since the 2017 Fall's Creators Update. It will make the game worst with it than without it. You can try changing these settings to "0" in the NVSR ini file and see if that helps:

bHookCriticalSections=0
bHookLightCriticalSections=0

If you still have problems, you will probably have to uninstall NVSR.

I own both New Vegas and Fallout 3 on Steam, and both got their share of problems - especially Fallout 3. I will buy both on GOG even though I already own them on Steam just because they seem more stable.

I gave up on NVSR. I tried every ini tweak on the net and still crashed. Somehow I got an incredibly stable game with no stutters without using it. Had about 60 mods and it ran perfectly. Added NVInteriors and the lod went to hell. Wish I could figure this one out. I can't add mods once I have a stable game going. I use FNVLODGEN and some added lod mods. What is really strange is I can't disable mods, all of them, and start a new game. I get out of Doc's office and the lod is screwed up everywhere. Invisible parts of mountains and the water tank at the cemetary looks like a water silo. Verify files does nothing to help this. I have to uninstall and start over. 4790K, GTX 980TI, and 32 gigs of memory, bought it when it was cheap, just because.
