Never tried NPCMod, but if it takes from Fallout 2, then there should be a dialogue option or button for combat options or tactics when you talk to them. Around the same place as "barter" and other options.

so there is this day time limit.which if you sleep alot goes by very fast.....does the game end if you dont find the water chip n those few days???? fallout 1

Yep. I'd suggest not sleeping a lot. :)
But there's no tremendous hurry anyway, assuming you follow the directions & plot and don't go wandering around aimlessly.

The game barely begins in that initial time limit, of course, as most of the game proper takes place after that period is done. It's just the introductory quest, really.
