Now I have a certain feeling about the huge love Fallout 1/2 (maybe tactics) has had over the years, I just want to know, as a person that does play RPG games (such as mass effect KoTOR1/2 and such) if this game would be something I'd truly enjoy.
Because the one thing I don't have about the game that many do (and is the reason GoG exists I guess) is nostalgia.
I remember wasting hours and hours playing Sonic 2 (which is still the best sonic game) and I have a big place for it in my heart. But having never played Fallout (and only playing on a slightly unstable demo of it where I got blown up by a Gatling gun XD ) I don't have the same love others here may have.
So I'm asking for a clear reason(s) for investing time/money on one or more of the fallout games. Please don't fanboy about it, just a clear reasonable argument either in favour or against getting the game(s).

It's cheap. If you buy and dont like it (I doubt) you wont lose much.
Apart from that, checking it out wont hurt will it. Some might say that it is acquired taste as for RPG. After you get through the initial stage of the game it is really worthwhile and rewarding experience ;]
It is one hundred percent worth it.
I never, ever played the Fallout series before I got them on GOG.com and now I regret not doing so sooner (then again the only time I saw them in the store they were mac versions).
with the Isometric view, you may feel like the game has a bit of a Diablo II feel (if you're like me and weren't into PC games back in the day and had to work your way backwards), but from an RPG point of view, the storyline is amazing, and how it changes depending on your characters stats, fantastic.
While I enjoyed playing through Fallout 1 for the first time just days ago, I think my opinion of it is quite a bit more negative than that of most people here. I am also just currently playing Mass Effect and enjoying it a lot, so maybe our opinions of games are similiar. So you may want to read my final impressions with Fallout 1 here (9th post from the top).
Still I can also recommend playing Fallout. Personally I don't "love" it, but it was a worthy experience because of the still unique scenario and just how different it is to most modern RPGs.
Well, I enjoyed KOTORs, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, so that's for new Bioware products, as well as say The Witcher, another new RPG, (Meaning our RPG taste is somewhat similar) and still I'd say Fallout is best of them - everything but graphics is somewhat better in Fallouts,,, Well, and maybe a main plotline.

I am also currently playing Mass Effect (for the first time). What I believe you may be doing, is considering both games on the same playing field, but they're inherently different. Like comparing an orange to a lime. Mass Effect is an Action RPG, wherein it's RPG effects are short, because it has to leave room for the action aspect. Fallout is pure turnbased RPG. It's fantastic for what it is.
I wondered the same, but figured what the heck, especially for tthe price. Wow! I can see why people love this game. There is just something about it that immerses you into this little world it creates. Great combat, interaction, consquences, etc. Fallout 3 has a lot to live up to.
Recommendation: Get them both for sure.
I'll be ordering Fallout Tactics as well. I read it's great.
:)

Of course I know that these two games are very similiar, I still noted Mass Effect because Somethingfake mentioned it as a game he likes, and so do I :)
I still think there are a lot of things, and not only the small technical ones, that at least Fallout 1 does wrong or could simply do a lot better.
But that's only my opinion, and as you for example are so very content with it the way it is, I guess it's okay after all and simply not quite the type of game I like very much :)
And I wanted to make that opinion more or less clear, to show that not everybody loves Fallout that much. But I'm still liking it, so I guess we're yet to see someone here who really can't stand it :D Also the price is of course one of the best arguments. For a mere $6 anybody might get a great experience worth much more, so there's hardly any reason for not even trying it out.

Fallout is one of the most immersive games I have ever played. If you enjoy getting sucked into a different time period/land and truly feeling "there," with a wonderful story, voice acting, and wealth of different options, I think you will enjoy this game.
One thing you will not get is great graphics, but if you enjoy gameplay more than visuals, you will like this game. The combat system is turn-based, and NPCs will act on their own without much intervention from you, which can be a bit frustrating at times.
Whether or not it is "worth" the investment is a good question. Personally, I feel that if you get just a full hour of "fun" out of the game, you are likely to feel that $6 is well spent, since you'll pay more for a night at the movies, and so on. For me, the game provides many, many hours of "fun," and more "fun" than a movie...at a fraction of the cost!
I don't think you will regret it, unless you can't get past outdated graphics.
(There is a high-res patch, but you tend to trade more viewing area and sharper graphics for more difficulty making out detail, depending on the resolution you set...not to mention the less than plug-and-play installation)
Good luck!

I guess it depends on if you feel 6 bucks is worth it for a game(s) that is/are considered classic and loved by many.
Will you find Fallout and Fallout 2 classic and love them just as much? Only you can be the judge. If you can get past old graphics the games have their own charm, and though I have yet to beat either I bought both as soon as I found my way to this site and saw them posted.
Tactics I'm not sure on, I've heard some mixed reviews on it. But for rpg's and that genre, you will probably enjoy Fallout and Fallout 2.
I play it on my 17-inch laptop and think it looks pretty nice without patching. Easily nice enough to be quite immersive.
Personally I don't see how you could go wrong for six bucks unless you're maybe the type of very rigid or maybe very young person who is allergic to anything different from his experience or not put out in the last ten minutes. Or maybe if you're a guy who doesn't really like much that doesn't move blur fast and twitchy. If you come willing to adapt to a little different playstyle in a world that allows a lot of exploring, gives you choices that have a real impact on your results, and don't get particularly furious about whether your graphics are cutting edge or not, there's a pretty good chance you'll have a good time with this game. It's got a great atmosphere. The world is a fun place to visit, do good deeds, and, er, kill people and mutants and ghouls in.
I have had both on my shelf for over a decade. Replay them about every 2-3 years (as I re-read Moon Is A Harsh Mistress every 3-4 since 1967 - TANSTAAFL just rings true). Also in this class of "worthy to redo" are the Jagged Alliance games, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate series, Ice Wind series.
I think the surreal resolution of all of my worst childhood fears (yes, I was taught to "duck and cover" at about age 6) which is a central theme in Fallout is part of the reason I keep coming back - your mileage may vary.
