In its SPECIAL blurb it says that Perception governs accuracy but how much does it aid distance shooting? I imagine that the skill level of your weapon of choice plays a larger role in affecting your ability to snipe but I have 6 perception on my sniper character just to be on the safe side.

Perception is a factor for many different skills....you see/hear enemies, you can heal better, traps, lockpick .
it determines the order when its your turn (perception x 2
for weapons perception is a factor for range, if you are real close you can get a bonus for hitchance (perception = 9,
your target is closer than 8 meters away = Bonus. Your target is more than your perception in meters away = minus)

So you don't get better at hitting people.
6 PER is probably okay for a ranged character. Some quests involve a perception check (eg for an alternate solution to the radscorpion quest in Fallout 1).
The weapon (and weapon range) makes a big difference, but Perception also makes a big difference. A sniper with PER 8 may get a 10% bonus or more on very long-range shots over PER 6, but for a shotgun (which has an innate accuracy bonus and a moderate range) it wouldn't do much good. But if you want to shoot people in the eyes from 40 hexes away, you're going to want Perception.

6 is probably fine, but the "ideal" PER value for a sniper is probably 7 or 8 depending on whether you're playing 1 or 2.
