Is there a reasonable chance of taking one of the ranged npcs along for the ride? I guess you can leave them outside the military base but Im sure you can make it through the cathedral as long as one of you has the robes on. Right?

Sure, you can always leave them in safe distance if it's going to be hot (and you want to snipe) and the robes give easy access to the cathedral. I always went through the game with company.
