Surprised I couldn't find any topics about this. I've noticed the hummer makes a much louder and more irritating noise than the other vehicles. There must be some way of shutting this off without turning off all of the sound in the game, but even turning off "sound effect" volume will leave it going--and I like having sound effects turned on anyway so I can hear gunshots and know to go looking for enemies or run away or whatever. I looked through the sound file directory but I didn't find any files that were obviously the source of this sound. Can anyone guess what I should do?

If it helps, I'm running it in wine on linuxmint 17.1. I have a laptop with KDE and a desktop with Cinnamon and both machines give me the same infernal racket.

I've no idea friend, it's been so long since I played Tactics.
I don't think you can make it quiet without changing the volume of other things, like gun fires, explosions, etc.

Isn't there a way of turning the car off without removing the driver?
Unless I'm mistaken, there is a way.

Unsure about this but maybe a mod is available to fix at nexusmods.

Go to Fallout Tactics\core\sound_0.bos\sound\Game\
you can open sound_0.bos whit Total Commander or any other file manager
there find files like VehHum_Death1.WAV, VehHum_Death3.WAV, VehHum_Idle.WAV, VehHum_Move.WAV end ect...
replace them with sound of any other vehicle
you don't need to replace them directly in sound_0.bos. Just take the sounds of other vehicle, rename them and put them into Fallout Tactics\core\sound\game\
It should work

Great, thank you! I actually just deleted the file. I tried moving a replacement (wherein I zeroed the audio) into the non-archived folder you mentioned, but that didn't seem to do anything, and it wouldn't allow me to add it to the archive, so I just removed it from the archive altogether and now it seems the game automatically substituted a quieter vehicle. So there's still a noise, but it's tolerable.

Of course, I still have the zeroed-out file, so I could possibly extract the archive, delete it, add the replacement to the folder and then archive it again under the same name, but I don't think I need to go to the effort at this point....

No problem.
I'm glad Igor suggestion worked! At least in part heheh. :p
This is a good game, it would really suck if you had to stop playing because of the loud sounds.
It's a well-made spin-off, unlike the Fallout game for PS2.
