I installed the unofficial patch, and now I can't load my saved game or even run it for that matter. I get to the main menu and try to play it, but then I get an application error which requires me to end the process to get back to my desktop. How can I fix this game so it is playable, with as few annoyances as possible?

Once the unofficial patch is installed, it corrupts any earlier saves. Sorry for your luck, but trust me the game is leaps and bounds better with the patch.
