As it seemed for the most part, they let Obsidian have complete control.

And the fact almost nothing from Fallout 3 is mentioned in passing, and Ulysses being a mouthpiece for Chris Avellone and subtly insulting various things from Fallout 3, such as the Wasteland implied to be getting better over time, while hte original devs insisting the Wasteland will only get worse and worse.

Yet, we get cute little cameos, such as "The Wasteland Survival Guide" as a skill book, canonizing that Moira did in fact finish it. And photos of the parents of The Lone Wanderer in a random house implying that they lived in the Mojave before they moved to Vault 101

So... does Obsidian hate 3 or not?

But back to my first question, is if Bethesda forced them to connect continuity for the sake of connecting continuity? Or if that was Obsidian's decision?

Well... if we take in consideration that the New California Republic born in Fallout 1, and become a power in Fallout 2, that statement about "things will only get worse" is not exactly respected by the original cannon.

But yes, Obsidian ask intermission for making the game, the Bethesda's intrusion was minimum at best (only requesting that the game would take place in the western USA) or that say the official channels.
