I want to buy Fallout 3 on GOG but I want to know if it's the same as the Steam version as in it doesn't work properly on Windows 10.

The GOG version is better. It doesn't have the outdated Games for Windows Live DRM, which was known for causing serious problems. Also the game includes the community 4 GB patch, which greatly improves stability. Keep in mind however that some uses still experience problems with running the game. I'm sure however that GOG Support will help you run it if you encounter any problems. You can also ask for a refund for 30 days after your purchase.

Any information on the problems? I just came here with the same question as the OP, lol. :)
It does run fine on my Windows 10 machine.

Of course that doesn't mean, that other people may not experience some problems, but it does mean that the game is not generally unplayable on Windows 10.
I'll buy it soon and see if it works better than the Steam version.

It depends. Some users experience problems launching the game, some experience crashes during their playthrough. You can search the forums to check this by yourself. The problems are not that frequent however. Keep in mind that people are more keen to post when they run into problems than when everything works fine. :)

I am on:
- Windows 10 version 1909
- Coffee Lake Refresh & Turing Architecture

The game would randomly crash roughly every 10 min.
I was able to fix it.
Game has not crashed even after a long 10 hour play test.

All I did was:
- Set the fallout3.exe to run in compatibiility mode for Vista Service Pack 2
- Set it to run as administrator
- Edited My Documents\My Games\Fallout3\Fallout.ini by finding iNumHWThreads = 2 and changed it to 1

Hope it helps someone.

EDIT: I Ignored the OS notification to install gfwlivesetup.exe and did not install it.

Interest I need to test this as the game keep crashing on my randomly when I open my inventory. I had no problem running this game on windows 8.1 but windows 10 seems to hate it for me lol
I use the fallout mod manager for patches etc. It workd great on win 10 1909. I had no problwms prior to the FOMM though.

Hey, thanks for this! I still had some problems despite GOG's (welcome) fixes and I hope this fixes my issues.
I bought it and ran into so many issues trying to get it to start up and run, finally after many headaches I deleted my Fallout.ini (located in Documents/My Games/Fallout 3) and then tried to start it up as a last ditch effort and wouldn't you know, it works perfectly fine now, no idea why

I have both versions, have had a much better experience with the GOG offering. The Steam version even had some serious issues with Win 7.
I've come from Steams Fallout GOTY and experienced crashes, just bought gog version, hopefully its better!

Edit: For anyone running into freezing problems these 2 minor fixes greatly improved stability, thankfully because I was about to give up on this old gem of a masterpiece. So I've got both Steam and GoG versions of Fallout 3 GOTY, Steam version worked fine up until the end of vault 101 escape when it crashed (Black screen, background music still playing, had to relog my PC) when I went through a "Door/New area" loading screen. Then continued to crash in the same way going through other door loading screens, it was random though, some doors would be okay. So I seem to have solved this issue by turning off the autosave, all 3 of them, quicksave also caused the same issue but not as much, but again it was random so don't use that, only manual saves. But the real problems started when I got to the super duper mart when 1 particular raider would freeze the game (No black screen this time, just frozen), only way I cleared the area was to go find a sniper rifle and 1 shot crit head shot the guy, and the crashing stopped though when more raiders showed up, same freeze happened, usually during up close combat/gunfights, though it did happen longe range on my first attempt to assassinate this crash inducing raider. Anyway I Done these next steps (Modifying the Fallout.ini file)

The game engine has some issues with processors that have more than 2 cores. You can force the game to only use two of them and it will stop the freezing. I haven't had it freeze once since I did this several days ago.
Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\Fallout3
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Once I had done that the 'Battle freezes' stopped, I went back to super duper mart to check and it did not crash

Also, alt tabbing out of the game can somtimes cause problems, like it did for me just now.
