Fallout is easily one of the smartest and most fun RPGs ever. I have played this game at least 10 times (and that isn't many compared to some people) all the way through and each time I do so the experience is new and nearly as much fun as the time before it. Fallout 2 has more meat to it, but the first is the better game IMHO. If you want to try something new, try to play the game as a pacifist, it is difficult but completely doable. If you haven't played this game stop reading this and play it now!
