Fallout 2 is a great game, but not as good as Fallout 1. Yes, it's longer, bigger, with more guns, cities, quests etc., but the atmosphere is not so good. This game lacks of "The Glow" or "Junkyard" like location. Still it's really good game, very playable.
You've got a point there. While some of the mechanics of Fallout 1 were downright annoying, the way they made locations was much more akin to a post apocalyptic world. Even the random encounters were different, somehow more realistic. In FO2, you just have encounter things that want to kill you or trade with you. But in FO1, things are a little bit more interesting - "a particularly sneaky radscorpion tries to sneak up on you" or "Got distracted searching for water and lost X hours". Just a couple I can think up off the top of my head.
Yeaa... The Glow is the most coolest location in Fallout series. Fallout 1 rules.
