I was using the distro packages along with winetricks to no avail. The game would freeze every time I tried to start a new game and deleting the hazardous .ini file didn't help. Installed a number of wine prefixes and still nothing.

I've already switched from my distro packages to the most recent stable packages from wine-hq and now the game won't even open.

I have no idea where to go next.

My architecture is 64-bit, if it helps. Running the latest edition of Mint.
I know there's a lot of posts about Fallout 3 not working for whatever reason, but none of them seem to list the user's operating system. When I searched Linux, I got old posts that only refer to Fallout 1 and 2 (probably dating from before fallout 3 was even available on GOG) and the links to the directX downloads suggested in those posts are long since dead.

I've even tried running it in GOG galaxy, which I have been resisting using since it debuted and it still doesn't work. Won't even run. The launcher flashes once and then vanishes.

Fallout 3 is one of the only games i can't get to run on mint. The issue is that the game requires xlive.dll, which is rather hard to get for some reason. What's worse, it seems like whatever dll gets bundled with the fallout script extender doesn't have the exact same behavior on windows as it does Linux.

From my experimentation, i was able to deduce that the game worked alright, but when i tried to start a new game, it failed to load the intro movie. I have not tried a mod that slips the intro, but it might be worthwhile to investigate
