Although I've had FO3 (non GOTY) on Steam for many years, I barely ever played it (having played it even prior on console) and never began modding it.
However, for some strange reason I decided as of last night to mod Fo3 (I want to play my heavily modded New Vegas at the same time), and do not want to fuck around with TTW either.
Well, I'm on Windows 10 with a quite modern system (including a 2080 Ti) and getting Fallout 3 to work on Steam (I didn't even have the DLCs either, so fuck that) is pretty much out of the question at this point.
So...I bought the GOTY edtion on GOG today (I even registered just for it). It allegedly can function on Windows 10 and also has LAA built into it by default. Problem solved? Nope.
Game will launch and the launcher works completely fine, as does the main menu. I start a new game, however, or use console commands from the main menu (such as 'coc megaton'), there is a black screen. Music plays, but that is it. As for the former, the entire intro plays but as soon as the PC birth scene happens, there is blackness (the heart rate monitor can be heard in the background though). From this point there is no way to exit the game without alt-tabbing and selecting to restart the PC (task manager does not work whatsoever), and then hopefully clicking 'cancel' before my PC restarts.
Additionally, if trying to exit the game from the main menu...also a black screen. Nice, eh?
Originally I thought this was due to mods, but I reinstalled the game again and am trying with everything completely vanilla. I also tried those Fallout.ini suggested fixes (that one with the iNumHWThreads=2 and such), but it did nothing. Wtf is going on?
edit: I neglected to mention that since I originally had Fo3 on Steam (and installed too), I already had a Fallout 3 folder in 'my documents' with my ancient saved games (last played in 2014) and preexisting .ini files. Due to remnants of the notoriously shite GFWL on the Steam install, I cannot permanently delete my old saves either...they just keep on coming back lol. Is this possibly related?
