Cameron: if my memory serves me correctly they have no ranged attacks
Your memory serves you wrong I'm afraid, they shoot thorns, spores or whatever they were called, at you. (they don't have a long reach with them though)

Faithful: OK, guys your advice was spot on. I talked to him, fought him and then got through the level.

If I had known that you killed him I would've understood why you were surrounded by enemies and could've aided you. :)
When someone who's not a real enemy (villagers, that bloke and such) runs away and you're stuck in battle, check the lower, right side of the screen, there are two buttons there "combat" and "turn", use the "combat" to get out of combat mode. (if they're real enemies the game won't allow you to leave combat mode)
In some cases it might think of villagers as enemies though, in those cases doing a "end turn" first and then "end combat" usually works, if not and you're sure that it's just one of your partymembers going on the attack on someone who's not really hostile, move towards the opposite direction and repeat the above.
Very injured enemies can start to run away and if you know that you have no chance of killing them, stand still and let someone from your party chase after them instead. (the enemies will stand still and let themselves be killed, it might be a bit cheap to do it that way, but it beats having to go into combat mode every time you encounter that enemy whenever you visit the same location)
Just a few good to know things for future use, hope you enjoy the game and become one of us "glittering gems of hatred". :) (for those unfamiliar with the term, it was given to the hardcore fanbase of the two fallouts by someone at Something awful)
